4.1 Types of Indexes

The author or editor of a volume is ordinarily responsible for preparing any indexes required for publication. The type and extent of indexing should be discussed with the publisher or project editor, since not every work requires the same apparatus. A short essay collection, a devotional manual, a scholarly monograph, and a reference work will each have different indexing needs.

Most substantial books should include at least a subject index. Works dealing heavily with Thelemic, religious, classical, magical, or esoteric sources may also benefit from an index of primary texts, sacred writings, rituals, technical terms, or cited passages. Some volumes may also call for an author index, especially when the work engages a wide range of historical figures, scholars, practitioners, or modern commentators.
