§4 Indexing

Indexes are not merely technical appendices; they are tools of use. A good index helps readers return to important ideas, names, texts, rituals, symbols, and arguments without having to remember exactly where they first appeared. In Thelemic and occultural works especially, where a single volume may move between scripture, history, magical practice, philosophy, and commentary, a careful index can make the difference between a book that is simply read and a book that can be studied.

This section offers basic guidance on the preparation of indexes, including subject indexes, author indexes, and indexes of sacred or historical sources where appropriate. The goal is not to index every passing reference, but to identify the terms and topics a reader is likely to seek later. Headings should be clear, concise, and consistent, with useful cross-references when a topic may reasonably be known by more than one name.
