2.1.4 Punctuation after Italics
Punctuation should normally match the style of the surrounding text, whether roman or italic. The main exception occurs when the punctuation is part of a title, term, or quoted element that is itself set in a different style.
For example, punctuation that belongs to an italicized title should be italicized with the title; punctuation that belongs to the surrounding sentence should remain in the surrounding style. For further explanation and examples, see CMS17, §6.2.
