2.3.2.1 Spelling
For spelling, hyphenation, and capitalization, follow the hierarchy of authorities established in §1.4: Editorial Responsibilities. These standards apply even when an author normally uses British spelling, unless the project style sheet or publisher specifies otherwise.
For ordinary English words other than proper nouns, use Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary as the preferred spelling authority. When more than one spelling is given, use the first form listed. In general, a final consonant is doubled before a verbal ending only when the final syllable is stressed: worshiping, worshiped, but compelled, compelling.
