5.1.3.2 Abbreviations, Foreign Terms, and Included Titles

When abbreviations such as BCE and CE appear in a book title, set them in full capitals, not small capitals. If the title is italicized, the abbreviations should be italicized with the rest of the title (see CMS17, §8.171, 14.86, 14.94–95). Non-English words appearing within an English title should ordinarily be treated as part of the title and italicized accordingly.

Titles that appear within other titles should be enclosed in quotation marks, even when the internal title is itself the title of a book. Capitalize the internal title according to the capitalization style used for the larger title. For further guidance, refer to CMS17, §8.163, 8.171, 14.94–95.

In notes and bibliographies, replace ampersands in titles with and unless the ampersand is essential to a formal name or publisher’s style. Likewise, in English-language titles, spell out numerals that would ordinarily be spelled out in running prose: for example, use Second-Century Magic and Ritual, not 2nd-Century Magic and Ritual. Foreign-language titles may retain the numbering and forms used in the original.
