5.1.2.2 Pre-Modern Authors

Premodern and ancient works may be listed either under the name of the original author or under the name of the modern editor or translator, but one method should be used consistently throughout the bibliography. If a bibliography lists such works by original author, use the standard English form of the name rather than reproducing every spelling found on individual title pages.

For example, use Iamblichus, not Jamblichus; Apuleius, not Apuleio; Plotinus, not Plotinos; Proclus, not Proklos; Hermes Trismegistus, not Hermes Trismegistos; and Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite, not merely Dionysius where confusion may result. Fuller identifying forms may be used when needed, such as Zosimus of Panopolis, Michael Psellus, or Synesius of Cyrene, especially when a shorter form could be ambiguous. Standard English forms may generally be verified in library catalogs and reliable scholarly reference works.
