5.1.3.6 Primary Sources

In the body of a manuscript, cite primary sources parenthetically whenever the reference can be given briefly. This includes Thelemic texts, biblical texts, classical works, scriptures from other religious traditions, ritual documents, and other primary sources. Place the parenthetical reference before the final punctuation when the citation belongs to the sentence itself.

  • The command is not merely to act, but to discover and accomplish one’s own proper course: “Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law” (AL 1:40).
  • The text distinguishes love from sentimentality by binding it directly to Will: “Love is the law, love under will” (AL 1:57).

If identifying the translation, edition, or version is important, include that information after the reference.

  • “Aum! let it kill me!” (AL 3:37r, OTOV)
  • “The kingdom of God is among you” (Luke 17:21 NRSV).

For longer extracts set apart from the main text, place the citation in parentheses after the final punctuation of the quoted passage. Include the translator, edition, or version unless the source has already been identified clearly in the surrounding discussion or in an earlier note.

  • But to love me is better than all things: if under the night-stars in the desert thou presently burnest mine incense before me, invoking me with a pure heart, and the Serpent flame therein, thou shalt come a little to lie in my bosom. For one kiss wilt thou then be willing to give all; but whoso gives one particle of dust shall lose all in that hour. Ye shall gather goods and store of women and spices; ye shall wear rich jewels; ye shall exceed the nations of the earth in splendour & pride; but always in the love of me, and so shall ye come to my joy. (AL 1:61a-l)

If one translation, edition, or version is used throughout a work, it is usually best to state this at the first citation or in a note near the beginning of the manuscript. For notes and bibliography treatment of primary sources, see §5.4: Source Citation: Special Types. For specific guidance on citation of Thelemic hierological texts, see §6.2 Thelemic Hierological Texts & Versions.
