5.1.4.1 Names of Publishers

In notes and bibliographies, publisher names should usually be given in shortened form. Omit terms such as Press, Publishing Company, Publishers, Books, or similar wording unless the term is part of a university press name or is needed to avoid confusion or awkwardness. Thus, use Weiser rather than Samuel Weiser, Inc., but Oxford University Press, State University of New York Press, or Cambridge University Press.

Retain an ampersand when it forms part of the publisher’s name, as in Rider & Co., Faber & Faber, Watkins & Co., or Harper & Row. Do not insert a serial comma before an ampersand in a publisher name.

When a press is named for its founder or a family name, the shortened form usually gives only the surname: Llewellyn, not Llewellyn Publications; Red Wheel/Weiser, not Red Wheel/Weiser, LLC; Routledge, not Routledge & Kegan Paul unless the historical publisher’s full name is relevant to the edition being cited. If the publisher’s name refers to a historical figure rather than a founder or family name, retain the fuller form when needed for clarity.

Use the following list as the house reference for citing publisher names and publication locations. Each entry gives the preferred form of the publisher’s name for bibliographic use and, where helpful, the location most commonly associated with that publisher.

When a source lists more than one place of publication, cite only the first location given on that source’s title page or copyright page. Where the list supplies a state, province, or country after a city, include that additional information in the citation. Where no such qualifier is supplied, the city alone is normally sufficient.
