5.2.25 Electronic Book

Books downloaded from a library, database, or bookseller may appear in several electronic formats, including PDFs and editions designed for e-readers such as Kindle, Apple Books, or Nook. If a PDF reproduces the print edition exactly, including stable pagination, no format designation is needed. For e-reader editions or other formats that do not reproduce the print edition exactly, identify the format consulted. The format statement follows the publication information.

  1. Lon Milo DuQuette, Understanding Aleister Crowley’s Thoth Tarot: New Edition (Newburyport, MA: Weiser Books, 2017), Kindle edition, chap. 3.
  2. DuQuette, Understanding Aleister Crowley’s Thoth Tarot, chap. 3.

Because e-reader editions often lack stable page numbers, citations to the corresponding print edition are preferred whenever possible. If the electronic format is the version consulted and no stable page numbers are available, cite a chapter, section heading, numbered paragraph, or another searchable locator instead of a page number. For books consulted online, include a DOI when one is available. If there is no DOI, include a URL or the name of the database.
