1.1.2 Preliminary Technical Matters

Before drafting or submitting a manuscript, authors should confirm that their electronic files are compatible with the publisher’s requirements. Editors and production staff can often work with many common formats, but compatibility should never be assumed. This is especially important when using older software, highly specialized programs, unusual formatting, non-Latin scripts, occult fonts, magical alphabets, symbols, diagrams, or other elements that may not transfer cleanly between systems.

When in doubt, authors should consult the publisher in advance and provide a short sample file along with a matching PDF. The editable file allows production staff to test compatibility, while the PDF shows how the material is intended to appear. This simple step can prevent serious formatting problems later in the process.
