1.1.2.1 Fonts
Manuscripts should be prepared with Unicode fonts, especially when they include non-Latin alphabets such as Hebrew, Greek, Coptic, Arabic, Sanskrit, or other historical and ritual languages. Unicode fonts assign characters to standard locations, which allows text to remain stable when moved between computers, operating systems, word processors, and typefaces. Older non-Unicode fonts often placed characters in arbitrary locations, making them prone to corruption or substitution during editing and production.
For Hebrew, authors are encouraged to use Ezra SIL, particularly when working with biblical or pointed Hebrew. For Greek, Galatia SIL, or a suitable Noto Greek font are recommended. The Noto family may also be useful as a general multilingual fallback, especially in documents that include several languages or need broad cross-platform compatibility. These fonts should function reliably in common word-processing programs such as Microsoft Word, LibreOffice, and OpenOffice when properly installed.
Occult alphabets and magical scripts require additional caution. Enochian fonts, for example, are often not true Unicode script fonts but symbolic fonts mapped onto ordinary Latin characters. This means that the text may display correctly only on a computer that has the same font installed, and it may become unreadable or misleading if the font is changed. Authors using Enochian, magical alphabets, cipher scripts, sigils, or specialized occult symbols should consult the editor before submission.
When unusual fonts or scripts are used, authors should submit both the editable manuscript file and a matching PDF that shows the intended appearance. The editable file allows the text to be reviewed and prepared for production; the PDF provides a visual reference in case characters, symbols, spacing, or formatting shift during transfer. The publisher will determine the fonts used in the final design, but authors are responsible for providing clean, stable text that can be edited and typeset without avoidable errors.
