1.1.3.8 Footnotes & Endnotes
Use the automatic footnote function in your word processor. Even if the final publication will use endnotes rather than footnotes, notes should not be typed manually, numbered by hand, or placed in a separate file. Production editors can convert automatically generated notes to the required format much more reliably than they can repair manually created notes.
Notes that belong to a table should remain with that table, not with the notes to the main text. Do not attach notes to chapter titles, article titles, or subheadings. Information such as acknowledgments, prior publication history, permissions notices, or similar material may be placed in an unnumbered opening note at the beginning of the chapter or article when appropriate.
