1.4 Editorial Responsibilities

Editors and proofreaders should work to preserve both consistency of style and the particular needs of each work. A manuscript should not be forced into mechanical uniformity when its subject, genre, or intended audience requires a more careful judgment. At the same time, consistency cannot be left to instinct. Editors therefore rely on a clear order of authorities when making style decisions.

The usual order of authority is as follows:

  1. The book or project style sheet (§1.4.1)
  2. Mere Thelema Manual of Style (§1.4.2)
  3. The Chicago Manual of Style, 17th ed. (§1.4.3)
  4. Other relevant authorities, when needed, including dictionaries, specialized academic style guides, publisher requirements, or established conventions within Thelemic and occultural writing. (§1.4.4)
