1.4.4.1 Hierological Names and Terms

For names, titles, and technical terms drawn from religious or esoteric texts, follow the edition, translation, or source text being used in the work. The controlling source should be identified in the project style sheet, especially when a manuscript relies heavily on scripture, ritual, liturgy, magical texts, classical sources, or translated materials. If translations are the author’s own, this should be stated clearly.

For Thelemic primary texts, this manual generally prefers the pre-2013 text of Liber AL vel Legis (see §6.2.1: Divisions, Units, Texts, and Versions for information on version notation) and any other Thelemic text as published in the 1983 Samuel Weiser edition of The Holy Books of Thelema, unless a project has a clear reason to use another edition. For other religious, magical, or esoteric traditions, editors should follow a recognized and consistently applied source, giving special care to proper names, divine names, titles of texts, technical vocabulary, and terms whose spelling varies across traditions or translations.
