2.3.1 Commentaries by Aleister Crowley
Crowley’s own commentaries on Thelemic texts should be cited as works by Crowley, even when they are published in an edition edited by another person. For example, The Law Is for All contains Crowley’s commentary on Liber AL vel Legis and has appeared in editions associated with Israel Regardie, and Louis Wilkinson and Hymenaeus Beta. The edition used should be identified in the first full citation, since wording, arrangement, editorial apparatus, and supplementary material may differ among editions.
First note:
- 1. Aleister Crowley, The Law Is for All: The Authorized Popular Commentary to The Book of the Law, ed. Louis Wilkinson and Hymenaeus Beta (Tempe, AZ: New Falcon Publications, 1996), 74.
Shortened note:
- 2. Crowley, Law Is for All, 74.
Bibliography:
Crowley, Aleister. The Law Is for All: The Authorized Popular Commentary to The Book of the Law. Edited by Louis Wilkinson and Hymenaeus Beta. Tempe, AZ: New Falcon Publications, 1996.
When citing Crowley’s commentary on a specific verse, the verse reference may be included in the sentence or note, but the citation should still point to the page of the commentary.
- Right: Crowley interprets AL 1:40 in relation to the discipline of the aspirant.¹
- Wrong: Crowley interprets the verse in relation to the discipline of the aspirant (AL 1:40).
The wrong form cites the primary verse, not the commentary on the verse.
