2.3.2 Commentaries and Notes in Edited Volumes

Some Thelemic commentaries and annotations appear inside edited collections, such as volumes of The Equinox. In these cases, cite the author of the commentary or paper first, followed by the title of the piece, the title of the volume, the editor, publication information, and page number. Crowley’s commentaries on several different Holy Books were published in The Equinox vol. 4, no. 1, edited by Hymenaeus Beta.

In citations, render volume numbers as Arabic numerals regardless of how they appear in the source. Abbreviate volume and number in lowercase as vol. and no. When a volume number is followed directly by a page reference, omit vol. and separate the volume and page numbers with a colon, with no space before or after the colon.

First note:

  • 3. Aleister Crowley, Commentaries on the Holy Books and Other Papers: The Equinox, vol. 4, no. 1, ed. Hymenaeus Beta (York Beach, ME: Samuel Weiser, 1996), 112.

Shortened note:

  • 4. Crowley, “Commentaries on the Holy Books,” 112.

If the paper cites the volume as a whole rather than one specific commentary or essay, cite the whole volume. If the paper cites a specific contribution within the volume, cite the author and title of that contribution.
