2.3.3 Editorial Notes, Introductions, and Annotations

Editorial notes, introductions, annotations, and appendixes are not part of the hierological text unless they are themselves being treated as primary material. Cite them by editor or author when known. If the note is unsigned but belongs to the edition’s editorial apparatus, cite the editor of the volume or the edition as a whole.

  • Right: Cite the editor’s note by editor, edition, and page number:
  • Aleister Crowley, The Holy Books of Thelema, ed. Hymenaeus Alpha (ME: Samuel Weiser, 1988), 27.
  • Wrong: Cite the note only by the passage being discussed:
  • Liber LXV 2:17.

For example, a note explaining LXV 2:17 should not be cited simply as LXV 2:17. The verse reference tells the reader what passage is being discussed; it does not tell the reader where the note or explanation can be found.
